Professor Alsultany is the co-founder with Nadine Naber (2005) and director (until December 2018) of the Arab and Muslim American Studies (AMAS) program at the University of Michigan. This program is one of only three comparable programs in the world that focus on Arabs and/or Muslims in the U.S. context. As co-founder and director, Alsultany spearheaded the program’s curriculum development, established an undergraduate minor, built an internships program, initiated the hiring of additional faculty and lecturers, invited guest speakers, and organized community-building events. The development of this program reflects her commitment to carving out institutional locations for Arab and Muslim American Studies within Ethnic Studies.
